EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Mostyn Arms pub in Brixton, London, as it once stood at the corner of Atlantic Road and Acre Lane. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, showcases the pub's distinctive red brick façade adorned with ornate white detailing and the iconic "Mostyn Arms" sign. The Mostyn Arms, a beloved local watering hole, holds a rich history dating back to at least 1929, as evidenced by the trading record detailed on the reverse side of this print. The pub was a staple in the community for over 40 years until its closure in 1961. Sadly, as of July 2018, the Mostyn Arms and the surrounding street no longer exist. The site has been redeveloped and is now home to Crawshaw Court, a residential block. The passing of time and urban development have erased the physical presence of this historic pub, but its memory lives on through images like this one. The Mostyn Arms was once a gathering place for the local community, a place to share stories, make connections, and enjoy a pint. The pub was a part of the larger network of establishments owned by the Charrington and Company Limited, a significant player in the London brewing industry during the early 20th century. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the past, inviting us to reflect on the history of Brixton and the role that pubs like the Mostyn Arms played in shaping the community.
