EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illustration is taken from "Pomona Franconica," a horticultural publication produced by Johann Mayer of Wurzburg between 1776 and 1801. Entitled "Cerise Guigne," or early heart cherry, this illustration showcases the beautiful flowers and fruit of the Prunus sp. heart cherry, a type of cherry tree belonging to the Rosaceae family, specifically the subfamilies Fabaceae and Amygdalidoideae, and the genera Prunus and Amygdalus. As a member of the Angiospermae, or flowering plants, the heart cherry is an eudicot, characterized by the presence of two seed leaves, or cotyledons, and net-like veins in its leaves. The tree is also an early-flowering eudicot, with the blooms appearing before the leaves. The illustration provides a detailed view of the heart cherry's delicate flowers, which feature five petals arranged in a rosette around a central receptacle. The petals are variously colored, with some displaying a pink hue and others white, and they are adorned with intricate veining and subtle striations. At the center of the flower, the stamen can be seen, with their filaments extending from the receptacle and anthers poised to release pollen. Surrounding the stamen is the pistil, which consists of a stigma, style, and ovary, and is responsible for the development of the fruit. The heart cherry's fruit, also depicted in the illustration, is a small, round drupe, with a fleshy outer layer enclosing a single seed. The fruit is named for its distinctive heart-shaped seed, which is visible within the drupe. This illustration not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of the heart cherry, but also provides valuable insights into the botanical classification and anatomy of this fascinating plant.
