EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up and feast your eyes on this promotional postcard for the musical sensation, Topsy and Eva, starring the inimitable Catherine Chisholm Cushing as Topsy and her sister, R. and V. Duncan as Eva. This musical adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin made its debut in England at the Hippodrome in Lewisham on August 20, 1928, and later graced the stage of the Gaiety Theatre on October 4 of the same year. Theatrical impresario C.B. Cochran discovered the production in Chicago and was astounded by its success. Defying all theatrical conventions, Topsy and Eva should not have run for more than a week, but it went on to make a fortune. The production was a popular entertainment phenomenon of the 1920s, drawing large crowds with its innovative blend of music, dance, and drama. Catherine Chisholm Cushing's portrayal of Topsy was a standout performance, and the Duncan sisters' rendition of Eva added to the production's allure. This postcard serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of Topsy and Eva, a theatrical anomaly that captivated audiences during the twenties and continues to intrigue us today. Join us in reliving the magic of this theatrical marvel and immerse yourself in the rich history of popular entertainment of the 1920s.
