EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcolored illustration, entitled "Walloon Soldier, 16th Century," depicts a brave and formidable soldier donning the distinctive armor of the Walloon infantry during the Renaissance era. The soldier wears a morion helmet, a conical helmet with a wide brim that offered excellent protection against sword blows and arrows. The helmet is adorned with a crest, likely representing the soldier's regiment or noble patron. The soldier's doublet, a fitted jacket, is made of dark fabric and features a high neckline and long, pointed sleeves. The trunk hose, which covers the thighs and is secured by a belt, is also made of the same dark fabric. The soldier wears hose, or tight-fitting stockings, which are visible beneath the trunk hose. The Walloon soldier is armed with a sword, a versatile weapon used for both slashing and thrusting, and a halberd, a polearm with a sharp axe head and a hook on the opposite end. The halberd was used for close combat and for prying open gates or breaching walls. This illustration, created by the skilled hands of E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and expertly lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, is taken from Georges Duplessis's seminal work, "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The meticulous attention to detail in this illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the military fashion and equipment of the 16th century, offering a valuable contribution to the study of historical costumes and military history.
