However, in 1870, it became the royal residence of the King of Italy, and it was here that Umberto and Marie Jose held their wedding reception. The wedding was a grand affair, attended by numerous European royals and dignitaries. The couple's union was significant not only for its political implications but also for the strong bond it created between Italy and Belgium. Their marriage lasted until Umberto's death in 1983, and Marie Jose remained a beloved figure in both countries until her passing in 2001.
