Women helped during the Great Strike 1926

In Mrs Loefflers canteen at Scotland House. Lady volunteers, including Lady Louis Mountbatten, feeding Special Constables, who had come to Scotland Yard to report, while on duty. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days. Date: May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph taken during the historic General Strike of 1926, women, led by Lady volunteers, are seen providing support and nourishment to Special Constables at Scotland Yard. The image captures a moment of solidarity and compassion amidst the chaos and tension of the time. The United Kingdom had been gripped by a General Strike in early May 1926, called by the Trades Union Congress in response to the threat of wage cuts for coal miners. Although the strike primarily affected key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways, it failed to gain widespread public support and was called off after just nine days due to the effective emergency measures implemented by the government. Amidst the turmoil, Mrs. Loeffler's canteen at Scotland House became a symbol of hope and kindness. Lady volunteers, including Lady Louis Mountbatten, are seen in the photograph selflessly feeding the Special Constables who had come to report for duty. Their presence served as a reminder that even in the midst of adversity, the spirit of community and care remained strong. The photograph offers a unique glimpse into the role of women during this pivotal moment in British history, as they stepped up to support their communities and provide essential services during a time of great uncertainty. The image stands as a testament to the resilience and compassion of the human spirit, even in the face of economic and political upheaval.
