Seeking a name for an orphan of the sea she has the reproachful eyes of a baby who has
Seeking a name for an orphan of the sea she has the reproachful eyes of a baby who has suffered. And so she has. She was found, hardly alive, on the beach at Shoreham, Sussex, with cuts on stomach and fins and her body covered in oil waste. No one knows where she came from: there are no seal colonies on that part of the coast. Now she has probably left the sea for ever. She has a new home at Brighton Aquarium, Sussex, although at the moment she doesn t seem to appreciate it. On Thursday (16-1-69) she was snapping at the keepers and had to be forcibly fed with fish. The aquarium are trying to think of a good name for her. A name is the first step towards domesticating the orphan of the sea. Eventually she will accept regular meals and the friendship of the keepers. Eventually even the reproachful look in her eyes may go. Wrapped in protective sheeting, the sea baby without a name. EDITORS COMMENTS
Seeking a Name for the Orphan of the Sea: A Tale of Resilience and Hope". In this poignant print captured in January 1969 by Mirrorpix, we are introduced to an orphaned creature who has endured unimaginable suffering. With reproachful eyes that mirror the pain she has experienced, this baby of the sea was discovered barely clinging to life on Shoreham Beach in Sussex. Her body bore deep cuts on her stomach and fins, while oil waste had marred her delicate form. Mysteries surround her origin as there are no seal colonies along that stretch of coastline. Now residing at Brighton Aquarium in Sussex, she embarks upon a new chapter far removed from her natural habitat. However, adjusting to captivity proves challenging for this resilient soul. Snapping at keepers and refusing sustenance, she resists embracing her newfound home. The compassionate staff at the aquarium diligently care for their newest resident, seeking solace in finding a name befitting her courageous spirit. They understand that a name is more than just an identifier; it symbolizes acceptance and domestication—a first step towards healing. Wrapped protectively in sheeting like a fragile treasure awaiting discovery, this sea baby without a name embodies both vulnerability and strength. As time passes and trust slowly blossoms between keeper and orphaned creature, we can only hope that one day those reproachful eyes will soften with gratitude and find solace within their new surroundings.
