EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the Edwardian era, where retired engine driver Herbert Turner, aged 78, stands as a symbol of elegance and timeless charm. Dressed impeccably in his well-tailored suit and polished shoes, Mr. Turner complements the exquisite lines of the ex-Metropolitan Railway E class 0-4-4 tank engine No. L46 that he proudly poses beside. Taken during a memorable tour of "Metroland" on September 23,1957, this snapshot captures not only the beauty of the steam train but also the camaraderie between Mr. Turner and driver Alfred Cornish as they engage in conversation amidst their beloved locomotive. It is worth noting that Sister engine No. L44 (Metropolitan No. 1) can be found preserved at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in Quainton Road – a testament to its historical significance. This particular journey holds special significance as it saw the fifty-year-old steam train take a group of passionate train enthusiasts on an unforgettable trip around London's inner circle on the underground railway system.
