Coventry Cathedral was visited by thousands of people on VE Day
Coventry Cathedral was visited by thousands of people on VE Day, and services conducted by the Provost(the Very Rev. R. T. Howard) and the Bishop of Coventry (Dr Neville Gorton) did not end until after midnight. The lighting around sanctuary, with the rest of the cathedral remaining in darkness, had an extremely impressive effect and heightened the significance of the occassion. Four services had been arranged for the day but such were the crowds that attended that supplementary services were held in the evening. The Cathedral remained open all night. Many people who had relatives in the war brought bunches of flowers and placed them in vases. This brought beauty to the tumbled masonry of the cathedral. Many names were also put into the bowl that stands on the alter in close proximity to the cross of nails and the charred cross that stands in the santuary.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Coventry Cathedral Shines Bright on VE Day: A Symbol of Resilience and Remembrance". In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we witness the profound impact that Coventry Cathedral had on thousands of people who flocked to its sacred grounds on VE Day. The services conducted by the Provost, the Very Rev. R. T. Howard, and the Bishop of Coventry, Dr Neville Gorton, lasted well into the night as they sought to honor those who fought for freedom. What truly sets this image apart is the striking lighting arrangement around the sanctuary while leaving the rest of the cathedral cloaked in darkness. This deliberate choice created an awe-inspiring effect that heightened the significance of this historic occasion. Originally planning four services for a day filled with celebration and reflection, it quickly became apparent that such was not enough to accommodate the overwhelming crowds. Supplementary services were held in the evening as people poured into Coventry Cathedral throughout all hours. The cathedral's doors remained open all night long, serving as a beacon of hope and solace for those seeking solace or wanting to pay tribute to their loved ones involved in war efforts. Bunches of flowers were tenderly placed in vases amidst tumbled masonry, adding beauty and life to a space once ravaged by conflict. As names were carefully inscribed onto slips of paper and deposited into a bowl near powerful symbols like crosses made from nails salvaged from bombed buildings or charred remnants found within these hallowed walls—this photograph encapsulates both resilience and remembrance. On May 8th, 1945, Coventry Cathedral stood tall as a testament to humanity's ability to rebuild after devastation—a poignant reminder that even amid darkness there is always room for light.
