EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from March 1990, we witness a significant moment in Lostwithiel's history - the opening of the town's first can recycling bank. The Mayor Dennis Hutchings proudly stands alongside Richard Bower MBE and Marian Chanter, an esteemed environmentalist, accompanied by her daughter Emily. Richard Bower, a resident of Lostwithiel himself, had served as Cornwall Councils Recycling Officer for several years. His dedication to promoting sustainable practices earned him numerous accolades including the prestigious National Recycling Officer of the Year Award in 2001, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and an MBE in 2007. The photograph captures the trio standing outside the community centre with its distinctive mayoral chain glistening under March sunlight. Behind them lies a lush playing field that symbolizes their commitment to preserving Cornwall's natural environment. The focus of attention is undoubtedly on the newly unveiled recycling bank itself – an innovative solution aimed at reducing waste and promoting responsible consumption within the community. Made primarily for aluminium cans, it represents Lostwithiel's determination to wash away wasteful habits and squash them once and for all. It is worth noting that this image should not be associated with any commercial use but rather serves as a testament to civic engagement and environmental stewardship embodied by individuals like Richard Bower who later embarked on producing jute and paper bags commercially alongside his wife Lesley. Photographer Jonathan Barker has skillfully captured this historic moment which now finds its place among other
