Gun electromagnet, 19th century

Gun electromagnet. Demonstration of the powerful gun magnet developed by Colonel William R. King (1839-1898) in the 1880s at Willetts Point, near New York City, USA. King developed this device while Commandant of the United States Engineers School. It was a large cannon wrapped with kilometres of electrical wiring. When electricity was run through the wiring, it produced an extremely powerful electromagnet. Here, four heavy cannonballs are suspended from it, and iron filings are being attracted to it (centre right). Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Gun Electromagnet developed by Colonel William R. King in the late 19th century. The image captures a demonstration of this powerful invention at Willetts Point, near New York City, USA. As Commandant of the United States Engineers School, King ingeniously transformed a large cannon into an electromagnet by wrapping it with kilometers of electrical wiring. The photograph reveals four heavy cannonballs suspended from the electromagnet while iron filings are irresistibly drawn towards its magnetic force. This stunning artwork was featured in the renowned French popular science weekly La Science Illustree's first volume in 1888. Colonel King's creation exemplifies both historical engineering prowess and technological innovation of its time. By harnessing electricity to generate an immensely strong electromagnetic field, he revolutionized military technology during this era. The monochrome illustration transports us back to a period when experimentation and scientific discovery were at their peak. It offers a glimpse into how engineers like Colonel King pushed boundaries and expanded our understanding of magnetism and electromagnetism. This mesmerizing image not only highlights the ingenuity behind this unique device but also pays tribute to those who paved the way for modern advancements in physics and engineering. It serves as a testament to human curiosity, determination, and dedication to progress that continues to shape our world today.
