GLC-LFB - Breakdown Lorry at Croydon HQ
The GLC-LFB was created on 1 April 1965. A series of photos was commissioned of each type of fire engine, either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The London Fire Brigades only Breakdown Lorry is seen here at the Southern Command Headquarters fire station (Croydon). The Brigade maintained a breakdown lorry from the early 1900s: its attended major accidents and supplemented the emergency tender crews with its heavy hot-cutting equipment. It was taken out of service in the late 1970s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the GLC-LFB Breakdown Lorry, a vital component of the London Fire Brigade's fleet, stationed at the Southern Command Headquarters in Croydon during the 1960s. The Greater London Council (GLC) London Fire Brigade was established on 1 April 1965, and this image is a testament to the diverse range of vehicles that were part of the enlarged brigade. The breakdown lorry, with its tow truck and heavy hot-cutting equipment, was a mainstay of the London Fire Brigade since the early 1900s. Its primary role was to attend major accidents and support emergency tender crews with its powerful cutting tools. The breakdown lorry was an essential piece of transport and equipment that ensured the London Fire Brigade could effectively respond to various incidents. This photograph, taken at the Croydon fire station, captures the breakdown lorry in its prime, ready to serve the community. The vehicle was eventually retired from service in the late 1970s, marking the end of an era for this iconic appliance in the London Fire Brigade's history.
