EDITORS COMMENTS
Blitz in London: A Mobile Kitchen Serving Meals to AFS and Firefighters During the intense bombing campaigns of World War II, also known as the Blitz, the London Fire Brigade faced immense challenges in providing sustenance for their tireless firefighters and the auxiliary fire services (AFS) personnel. In response to this need, the Canadian Red Cross generously donated mobile kitchens and canteens to the British fire services. One such vehicle, pictured here, hailed from the small town of Westlock, Alberta, Canada. The van, converted into a functional kitchen, was an essential appliance for providing hot meals and refreshments to the firefighters and AFS personnel during their grueling shifts. The 2nd Canadian Division Fire Brigade, which operated in London during the war, put this donated vehicle to good use, ensuring that the brave men and women on the frontlines received the nourishment they needed to continue their vital work. These vehicles, a testament to the international camaraderie and support during wartime, played a crucial role in the daily operations of the London Fire Brigade. The kitchen on wheels provided much-needed breaks for the firefighters, allowing them to rest and refuel before returning to the dangerous task of protecting the city from the devastating effects of the Blitz. The Canadian Red Cross's thoughtful donation of these mobile kitchens and canteens significantly boosted the morale and efficiency of the London Fire Brigade during the challenging wartime period. This photograph, taken in London, showcases the Westlock, Alberta, vehicle in action, serving meals to the valiant firefighters who were defending their city against the relentless bombing raids of World War II.
