EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the British Red Army, a unique formation of the Labour League of Ex-Servicemen (L.L.Ex.), as they assemble at Leytonstone in east London during a demonstration in April 1928. Commandant J. Snooks, a former Lieutenant in the British Army during the First World War, stands proudly among his comrades, wearing the distinctive uniform reminiscent of the Russian Red Army. The uniform, complete with a Soviet badge and the hammer and sickle device, reflects the political leanings of the Labour League, which advocated for communist ideologies. Mrs. Campbell, the Commandant of the Women's Section, is also present, her determined expression matching that of her male counterparts. The British Red Army was formed in response to the economic hardships and social unrest following the Great War, with the aim of providing support and solidarity for the working class. The location of the demonstration is believed to be Wanstead Flats, a large open space in London's Epping Forest, where political gatherings were common during this period. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the political tensions and ideological debates that marked post-war Britain, as various groups sought to shape the future of the nation.
