Tatler front cover - Mrs La Touche Congreve and baby daughte
Mrs William La Touche Congreve, wife of Major William ( Billy ) La Touche Congreve V.C. pictured with her baby daughter, Mary Gloria Congreve, born 21 March 1917. Major Congreve was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at at Longueval, France, between 6 and 20 July 1916. Major Congreve constantly inspired those round him by numerous acts of gallantry. As Brigade Major he not only conducted battalions up to their positions but when the Brigade headquarters was heavily shelled he went out with the medical officer to remove the wounded to places of safety, although he himself was suffering from gas and other shell effects. He went out again on a subsequent occasion tending the wounded under heavy shell fire. Finally, on returning to the front line to ascertain the position after an unsuccessful attack, he was shot and died instantly. He had only been recently married and his baby daughter, who was a god-daughter of Queen Mary, was born posthumously. It is notable that his father, General Sir Walter Norris Congreve, was also awarded the V.C. (during the Second Boer War) and they are one of only three father and son pairs to have achieved this. Mrs Congreve was previously Miss Pamela Maude, daughter of the actor Cyril Maude. She later re-married Brigadier, the Hon. William Fraser in 1919. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment between Major William La Touche Congreve V.C. and his newborn daughter, Mary Gloria Congreve, in 1917. Major Congreve, a true hero of the battlefield, had been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his exceptional bravery during the Battle of Longueval in France between 6 and 20 July 1916. His acts of gallantry were unwavering, as he led his troops to the front lines, tended to the wounded under heavy fire, and even went out to remove the injured from the danger zone despite suffering from gas and other shell effects himself. Tragically, Major Congreve was shot and killed while returning to the front line after an unsuccessful attack. He had only recently married his wife, Pamela Maude, who was the daughter of the actor Cyril Maude, and their baby daughter was born posthumously. Notably, Major Congreve's father, General Sir Walter Norris Congreve, had also been awarded the Victoria Cross during the Second Boer War, making them one of only three father-son pairs to have achieved this remarkable honor. This poignant image serves as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by Major Congreve for his country and the love he left behind for his young family.
