Royal Society for the Protection of Life from Fire medal

Firefighters from the insurance brigades and the London Fire Engine Establishment would put out the fires but did not provide much in the way of helping people to escape. In 1828 the RSPLF was formed to provide escape ladders which were put on street corners at night and kept in churchyards during the day. The medal was awarded to the escape conductors (firemen) who risked their lives to save others from fire

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Royal Society for the Protection of Life from Fire (RSPLF) medal, an emblem of courage and bravery from the 1820s. During this era, firefighters from the insurance brigades and the London Fire Engine Establishment primarily focused on extinguishing fires, yet they offered little assistance in helping people escape. In response, the RSPLF was established in 1828 to fill this critical gap. The RSPLF introduced a groundbreaking solution: escape ladders. These ladders were strategically placed on street corners at night and kept in churchyards during the day, ensuring that those in peril could reach safety when disaster struck. The brave individuals who risked their lives to save others from the flames were recognized with this medal as a token of appreciation for their selfless acts. The RSPLF medal is a poignant reminder of the early days of firefighting and the crucial role that organizations like the RSPLF played in shaping the way we respond to fires and protect lives. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and heroism of the firemen who put their lives on the line to save others during the Georgian era.
