EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the historic Grapes Public House in Southwark, London, as it looked in the late 19th century. The image, taken by an unknown photographer and dated 1897, presents a charming view of the pub's ornate exterior, adorned with intricate brickwork, ornate details, and the distinctive sign of the grapes hanging proudly above the entrance. The Grapes Public House, located at 76-78 Borough High Street in the heart of Southwark, was a popular watering hole with a rich history. Originally built by the Charrington and Company Limited, the pub was a staple of the local community for over a century. However, as of July 2018, the historic building was no more. Demolished and replaced with a new structure, the old Grapes Public House now exists only in photographs and memories. This image, in particular, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the pub was a beloved institution in the vibrant and historic neighborhood of Southwark. The back of the print provides additional details about the location, including the address and the date of the photograph. It also notes the unfortunate fate of the building, reminding us of the ever-changing landscape of our cities and the importance of preserving our history through photographs like this one.
