EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the vibrant streets of Grimsby, Lincolnshire in 1960. The focal point is the iconic Sugg Sport shop on Victoria Street, a renowned establishment that catered to sports enthusiasts for over a century. Established by Frank Howe Sugg in 1888, himself an accomplished sportsman who played for both Derbyshire County Cricket Club and Derby County Football Club, Sugg Sports quickly became a leading supplier of football, cricket, and fishing equipment. The image beautifully captures the exterior of the shop with its classic British architecture. A charming avenue lined with other buildings sets the scene as passersby stroll along the sidewalk. The monochrome effect adds a timeless quality to this snapshot of history. Michael Walters skillfully immortalizes this moment through his lens, showcasing not only his talent but also preserving an important piece of local heritage. As we gaze upon this photograph today, it serves as a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era when small businesses thrived and community connections were forged through shared passions. Although Sugg Sports ceased trading in 2002 after decades of success, its legacy lives on through images like these that transport us back to simpler times. This print stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship and love for sport that defined both Frank Howe Sugg's life and his beloved business.
