EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and panic on the deck of the RMS Falaba on the fateful day of March 28, 1915, this poignant moment was captured by the lens of a photographer working for the Illustrated London News. The scene depicts passengers hastily putting on their lifebelts, a brief respite before the reality of the imminent danger set in. The order for all on board to abandon ship had only just been given when the premature firing of a torpedo from the German U-boat U-28 hit the vessel. The RMS Falaba, a British passenger steamship, was sailing from Liverpool to New York when it was attacked in the North Atlantic during the early stages of World War I. The crew and passengers, numbering around 600, were given little warning before the vessel was struck. In the photograph, the expressions on the faces of the people on the deck convey a range of emotions - fear, determination, and a grim acceptance of the situation. The lifebelts, which were essential for survival in the event of a shipwreck, were a vital part of the safety equipment carried on board. Their importance is underscored by the urgency with which they are being donned in this image. The decking around them is slippery with water, adding to the sense of urgency and the potential for disaster. This photograph offers a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. It is a testament to the bravery and resilience of those on board the RMS Falaba and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
