EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the Duke of Clarence pub, located in Camberwell (New), London (SE5 0HB). Established in the early 20th century, the pub was once a proud part of the Charrington and Company Limited's extensive network of public houses. The image, taken in the 1940s, showcases the classic design of the building with its distinctive signage and red brick facade. The Duke of Clarence held a rich history, with a trading record dating back to 1932, as detailed on the reverse side of this print (available upon request). However, its story took an unexpected turn during the 1960s when it was illegally converted to religious purposes. The pub's transformation was short-lived, as it eventually reverted back to its original use as a bar, likely retaining the memories and stories of its past. The 1940s were a pivotal time in the history of the Duke of Clarence, as the photograph attests. The era brought about change and challenges, but the pub remained a staple in the Camberwell community. Today, the Duke of Clarence, though perhaps under a different name, continues to serve as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, carrying on the tradition of hospitality that began over eight decades ago.
