EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1968, we are transported back in time to witness a significant moment in British retail history. The image showcases the grandeur of Swan and Edgar, a prominent department store that was part of Debenhams Ltd, the largest department store group in the country at that time. Amidst a financial crisis gripping the nation, Debenhams Ltd launched an inspiring "Back Britain" and "Buy British" campaign to support local businesses. Mary Wilson, wife of the Prime Minister, played a pivotal role by inaugurating this campaign at Swan and Edgar. She graced the occasion with her presence as she explored every nook and cranny of the store. The photograph captures Mrs. Wilson's visit as she is seen purchasing a pair of elegant white leather shoes adorned with a corded silk bow – undoubtedly adding another fashionable item to her wardrobe collection. Accompanying her on this tour is Mr. John Bedford, Chairman of Debenhams Ltd. , who proudly guides her through their extensive range of products. This snapshot not only immortalizes an iconic moment but also serves as a reminder of how influential figures like Mrs. Wilson actively participated in supporting national businesses during challenging times. Bela Zola's lens perfectly encapsulates both the elegance within Swan and Edgar's walls and the determination to revive Britain's economy through patriotic shopping choices.
